We cycled out among it all as soon as we were ready. Our mileage had been low since stepping off the plane. We had been prepared for that, and had understood from the earliest days of planning that we would not be able to cover as many miles each day in Africa as we had in Europe and Asia. For a start, we had replaced our tyres with wider specimens in readiness for the substandard roads we would be encountering here; and we had increased the stock of supplies in our panniers, knowing that as we approached and then tackled the Sahara civilisation would dissipate and we would need to be more self-sufficient.
